Garlic (Allium sativum) The garlic plant eaves are grass-like, slender and shorter than the flowering stem. Garlic is a wonderful medicinal plant owing to its preventive characteristics in preventing and fighting bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections and enhancing the immune system. It contains sulfur compounds (allicin, alliin and agoene), volatile oils, enzymes (allinase, peroxidase and miracynase), carbohydrates (sucrose and glucose), minerals (selenium), amino acids such as cysteine, glutamine, isoleucine and methionine which help to protect cells from the harms of free radicals, bioflavonoids such as quercetin and cyanidin, allistatin I and allistatin II.
Garlic contains vitamins C, E and A which as well as B1 and B2 and beta-carotene. With its sulfur containing compounds, high trace mineral content, and enzymes, garlic has shown anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and antioxidant abilities. Diseases that may be helped or prevented by garlic's medicinal actions include cancer, cardiovascular disease and infections.
